Antibiotic Prophylaxis in Surgery
1. What are the principles of antibiotic propylaxis in surgery? antibiotics
- Prophylaxis should be given prior to incision, this is to acheive effective plasma and tissue concentration at time of incision.
- Most antibiotics whould be give no earlier that 60 minutes before incision.
- They should be given again if the procedure takes longer than 4 hours.
- The should be given again in the setting of massive blood loss.
- The duration of antibiotics should not be longer than 24 hours.
2. What antibiotics are typically given? antibiotics
- Cefazolin 2g IV for skin
- Metronidazole 500mg for GIT
- Plus Vancomycin if high risk for MRSA
- Replace cefazolin for gentamicin if high risk penecillin allergy
